As I put the spoonfuls of Vegemite into Straya I couldn't help but wonder how a beer could be if it were Nutella instead. I'm an adult. If I want to make a Nutella beer there's nothing stopping me. So here we are...
I grabbed a Morgan's dark ale brewing kit and a jar of Nutella. For this brew I used 500g of dextrose and 500g of malt, the logic behind this being that I wanted the head that the dextrose would provide with the smooth creaminess of a malt to compliment the cocoa flavour from the Nutella.
My boss saw the jar of Nutella on my desk as he was leaving work and knowing I was planning on going out that night said: "Good luck Bob. Hope you get to use that Nutella." In response I let out an embarrassed "Oh my god!".
5 days into the fermentation of this brew I tried using finings again. My dad has started brewing again with getting enviable results. My brain has decided the only variable responsible for this is his use of finings. You may recall my last run-in with finings caused my brew to fizz out of control and overflow. Not this time. This time I read the instructions on the packet: "Dissolve into a cup of warm water and add to beer." Reading helps. No overflow. Clearer beer.
I hadn't considered the issue of the oils from the Nutella, however they separated into neat little globules at the top of the fermenter.
When it came to bottling time I didn't have a name in mind. I tried to come up with several puns using the words "Nutella", "Ferrero", "Newcastle Brown" and any Japanese I could think of. I wanted a Japanese name because I'm going to Japan in less than a week and can't think of much else right now. Finally I settled on 暗記 (Anki) which means "memorisation". The individual kanji mean "dark" and "write down" respectively. Dark for a dark ale and memorisation for me being on the cusp of memorising 600 kanji. Drinking enough of it might also wipe your memory.
I set my awful calligraphy skills to work and labeled away.
It's either a testament to my overwhelming sadness or the quality of this brew that I drank two pints straight from the fermenter.
It tastes nice. The Nutella isn't overwhelming and it certainly has the level of creaminess I desired. I'll have to wait for it to carbonate properly before I can vouch for the volume of the head, but the flavour and mouthfeel are nice so what do I care?
Feedback: "Better than dad's." (Yesss!)
